Bluetooth FTMS
FTMS trainer app for iPhone
zCycle Pad is a Bluetooth FTMS smart trainer app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It is a workout cockpit — ERG, .zwo, live watts — not a virtual world. FTMS is an open protocol. Other indoor cycling apps speak it too. We do not claim exclusivity.
Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch. There is no Android app. Download is free. Starting indoor rides needs zCycle Plus at $4.99/month or $39.99/year.
What FTMS means
FTMS is Bluetooth Fitness Machine Service. If an indoor trainer advertises FTMS, an app can read power, cadence, and speed, and can send resistance targets (ERG and grade simulation). You pair inside zCycle Pad, not in iOS Settings → Bluetooth. Put the trainer in Bluetooth / FTMS / third-party mode, open the app, and scan. Pairing in Settings is the wrong path for trainer control.
zCycle Pad also pairs a BLE heart-rate strap as its own sensor. That is separate from FTMS. Chest straps (Garmin, Polar, Wahoo TICKR, and similar) are the usual choice for zone rides.
A workout cockpit, not a virtual world
If you searched for an FTMS iPhone app because you already own the trainer and do not want a map, this is the other lane. No avatar, no group ride, no game. The phone shows watts, HR, interval targets, and structured workouts. Broader positioning: Zwift alternative — workout cockpit.
An Apple Watch companion mirrors live power, HR, cadence, and interval haptics. The Watch does not pair the trainer itself. Pairing stays on iPhone or iPad.
Trainer and heart-rate strap on Bluetooth at the same time
On one iPhone or iPad, zCycle Pad keeps an FTMS trainer and a BLE heart-rate strap connected together, then can write a precise indoor workout plus HR to Apple Health. That is the fair claim for a real training routine — not a feature list about other apps. Local-first ride files stay on the device. Local-first is not fully offline: starting a ride still needs zCycle Plus.
Which trainers
We do not paste the full roster here. The hub is compatible FTMS trainers.
- Elite Suito — lab-tested Suito T (power, cadence, speed, ERG, grade sim).
- Wahoo KICKR — FTMS-expected, not SYSTM, not lab-tested on KICKR. Third-party Bluetooth mode, then scan.
- Tacx, Saris, Magene, Thinkrider, JetBlack, and similar — expected when they advertise Bluetooth FTMS.
We do not certify every SKU or firmware. FTMS must advertise. zCycle Pad does not calibrate trainers — use Elite myETraining, Wahoo’s tools, or the maker’s app for that.
Not ZYCLE hardware. zCycle Pad is an Adam Codes Ltd app. zycle.eu makes trainers in Europe. Unrelated. Pairing only if that unit speaks FTMS.
Pair in two minutes
- Wake the trainer. Switch it to Bluetooth / FTMS / third-party app mode (not the maker’s closed app lock, if it has one).
- Open zCycle Pad on iPhone or iPad. Scan in the app — not iOS Settings.
- Optionally scan a BLE heart-rate strap as its own device so trainer + HR stay connected together.
- Pick ERG, an HR-zone ride, or a
.zwoworkout. Start. Plus is required to start the session.
FAQ
What is an FTMS trainer app?
An app that speaks Bluetooth Fitness Machine Service: pair the indoor trainer in-app, read watts, control ERG. zCycle Pad does that on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It is not a virtual world.
Do I pair in iOS Settings?
No. Third-party / FTMS mode on the trainer, then scan inside zCycle Pad.
Which trainers work?
Lab = Elite Suito T. KICKR and others are FTMS-expected. Full list: compatible trainers.
Is there an Android app?
No. iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch only.
Does zCycle calibrate the trainer?
No. Calibration stays in the maker’s app. zCycle Pad is the cockpit after setup.
Are you the only FTMS app?
No. FTMS is open. See also the indie FTMS comparison. Our wedge is simultaneous trainer + HR → complete Apple Health, plus Watch.
